Bugs in iterations

Defects usually turn up in the middle of an iteration, in the story being worked on. Betterplan therefore treats a bug as a workitem with a bug flag below that story (see Report and track bugs). On the Iteration Board you see it where the work happens.

Recognize bugs on the board

In the QuickCart example, the story Assign driver carries a bug workitem.

The lane of the story Assign driver (1) with its two workitems; the workitem Backend API: Assign driver in the Doing column carries the orange label Bug (2)
The lane of the story **Assign driver** (1): the workitem *Backend API: Assign driver* carries the label **Bug** (2). The other workitem shows **Aging**, not a bug.

A bug workitem shows an orange Bug on its card. The story cell itself shows no bug label. You find the story's Bug badge in its details and in the Storyboard (see the bug rollup in Report and track bugs).

Report a bug

  1. On the board, click the title of the affected story. Its details open.
  2. Choose the bug icon Mark as buggy, enter the Title (and optionally a Description) and confirm with Report bug. The steps are in Report and track bugs.
  3. On the board, the new workitem appears in the story's Todo column with the label Bug.

You turn an existing workitem into a bug in its details with the Bug switch (group Classification).

Handle bugs

  • Move it like any workitem. Drag the bug to Doing and Done, give it an assignee and discuss it in the details. When work on the bug starts, Betterplan sets the story to Doing automatically if it was still on Todo.
  • Unresolved means not Done. As long as the bug isn't on Done, the story counts as affected. Once it is on Done, the rollup on the story goes away. The Bug flag stays on the workitem as history.
  • Completion doesn't wait. Betterplan doesn't stop you from setting a story with an open bug to Done or completing the iteration. Close the story only once the defect is fixed, because only closed stories count toward velocity.
  • Moving on. If you complete the iteration with an unfinished story, it moves with its workitems, bug included, to the next iteration (see Iterations).
  • See only bugs. With the filter Has Bug in the filter you hide everything else, for example for a bug round.
